"The Yard" is an artists and dance colony in Chilmark It has a
long-standing commitment to the arts in education. Through its multi-cultural and
artists-in-the-schools programs, The Yard bring world-class dance companies to Vineyard
schools each year. Its programs offer assemblies, creative movement and
multi-cultural dance classes, curriculum that dovetails with the work of music, theater,
physical education and social studies teachers, professional development for interested
classroom teachers, and culminating events in which students may perform for their peers
or community. In addition, visiting artists teach dance and choreography master
classes for adults and for island children who study dance more intensively outside of the
school setting. Contemporary dance groups are chosen for their artistic quality and their
proven expertise in teaching in the school setting. In recent years, multicultural groups
representing the dance traditions of West Africa, Korea, Brazil, Ireland, and Spain have
brought the world to island students.
The Yard brings regularly brings its popular dance performances to the
Tabernacle and the Marthas Vineyard Performing Arts Center to benefit its in-school
programs. These events bring some of the best performers the dance world has to offer to
Marthas Vineyard. Recent performances include: Alvin Ailey II, the popular Brazilian
music and dance group Negro Gato, the Caribbean Dance Company, and Harlem-based childrens
African dance group Batoto Yetu.
Yard choreographers and dancers are everywherein the news,
reviews, and in feature articles in The New York Times, Dance Magazine, the New Yorker,
and the fields finest arts publications. Yard choreographers, composers, and
designers have their work presented in such noted theaters as The Joyce Theater, Dance
Theater Workshop, City Center, The Metropolitan Opera, and BAM. Yard dancers tour with the
worlds most exciting dance companies, including Paul Taylor, Mark Morris, Alvin
Ailey, and Bill T. Jones. Yard artists teach choreography at The Juilliard School, NYU,
Princeton, UCLA, and many other distinguished conservatories and universities. The most
innovative arts-in-education organizations, including Lincoln Center Institute and Young
Audiences, have many Yard alumni on their faculty as teaching artists.
